Ornament: a movie magazine, told on Instagram

Ornament is an independent Moscow magazine about cinema — every issue is built around one theme. I was its Digital & Project Manager.

The task. A print magazine comes out rarely, but Instagram has to live every day. The content had to keep each issue’s mood between releases and give people a reason to come back.

What I did

— Ran the magazine’s Instagram

— Invented the recurring rubrics: What to watch tonight, Music in film, film breakdowns, the quizzes

— Made the visuals, GIF stories, motion and short animations

— Launch content for each issue

— Organised photo shoots

— Took part in issue brainstorms

— Helped produce the magazine’s film screenings

01

What to watch tonight

A GIF story that flicks through film titles and stops on one: tap to freeze it, and that is your film for the evening. It became the account’s signature rubric.

02

Music in film

A rubric about soundtracks: stories that pair a film with the music that makes it.

03

Film breakdowns

We kept trying new formats for talking about films: a long story taking one film apart, a series running across many films, a short video story. Her by Spike Jonze and The Peanut Butter Falcon are two of these experiments.

04

Guess the film by its wallpaper

A quiz rubric: first a close-up of the wallpaper, then the frame it came from.

05

Issue #1 — Wes Anderson

Content I made for the release of Ornament’s first issue, dedicated to Wes Anderson: illustrations and short animations based on his films, to announce the issue, carry its world over to Instagram and give readers more of it there.

Grand Budapest Hotel cards for a garland — I added illustrated elements to the photo, mixing photography and illustration.

Canis Lupus — a stop-motion animation of the wolf from Fantastic Mr Fox

Short animations: Wes Anderson in a Lobby Boy hat · Ash from Fantastic Mr Fox · Zero Moustafa

The issue’s Fantastic Mr Fox spread, brought to life for the film screening

City riddles teasing the Grand Budapest Hotel screenings: Moscow · St Petersburg · Rostov-on-Don

06

Issue #2 — Whiplash, Black Swan, Birdman

Three films about obsession and the cost of perfection.
